Judai and Ryan in ASAP ROCKS

A Wife, a HouseHusband & a Busybody

By Mario A. Hernando (The Philippine Star) Updated December 28, 2011 12:00 AM

Film review: My Househusband: Ikaw Na!
MANILA, Philippines - It has happened before in two earlier Metro Manila Film Festivals, and it may happen again in the current one; that is, a “mere light romantic-domestic comedy”would generate buzz, reap the major festival awards and be the overall box-office champion, beating out previously unshakeable action-fantasy-comedy spectacles.
It’s as though the people behind the movie is telling the box-office Goliaths to go ahead, play the field, draw the children in during the first few days. In the end, a broader base of moviegoers — young people, mature audiences, men and women of different social standing, and local moviegoers who do not usually watch local movies — will come to watch this much simpler but more thoroughly satisfying, feel-good comic drama.
This happened with Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo and the succeeding year’s Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo, which stunned the public and industry folk to realize that motley crowds would show up and pay tickets to see earlier Metro Manila Film Festival champions. The new movie, titled My Househusband: Ikaw Na!, was made by the same team — writer-director Joey Reyes and stars Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo. Ryan and Judy Ann did not make any movie for a while but they were never out of sight, thanks to TV shows, advertising deals, commercials and endorsements, and the long wait for the stork that fans joined, so that alone should take care of the revenues.
My Househusband: Ikaw Na! deals with the role reversal a husband and wife go through when the man is suddenly jobless and the woman has to work and be the breadwinner. Along with this new situation, thecouple has to deal with the attendant tensions, pressure, and conflicts, and make reality checks.
The movie was obviously conceived and written with the tried-and-tested Judy Ann-Ryan tandem in mind — a great real-life pair and the Philippines’ favorite showbiz couple. There popped the bright idea, though, that the brilliance and continued multi-media success of Eugene Domingo would add to the commercial potential of My Househusband. And it should. If Eugene were like the star-diva she played in the sleeper Ang Babae sa Septic Tank, she could have exerted some gentle pressure on the producers and co-stars to have the movie re-titled My Househusband and a Busybody and gotten her wish.
For as the third major character in the movie, hers is neither just a “decorative” role nor the comic relief (it’s already full of comic moments). Eugene’s character as the dumb-smart, loony, nosey neighbor is an important element in the relationship between the two major characters, the husband and wife, a catalyst to the waning strength of the marriage.
Thus, Ryan is Judy Ann’s househusband who does not have much face to show to the chatterboxes in the neighborhood. Being the “wife” is just too much for him. The male ego can only take so much. His parochial concern, however, does not jibe with the true personality of the modern man, like Ryan’s character should be. A fairly sophisticated man would not hide from the gossips of the village and take all the trouble to keep them from finding out that he wears the apron, does the laundry and takes care of the children. Still, the director-writer for the most part, depicts real situations, real people, and interesting plot turns, even makes sly ironic comment by playing the hit popularized by Village People Macho Man.
The first time English language users learned of the term “househusband” must be when John Lennon used it in an interview to refer to himself and rhapsodize about his marital state with wife Yoko Ono (or maybe a little earlier than that). Lennon described his marriage as blissful and all-satisfying — as house-bound father to child Sean and husband to Ono. This was the early ’70s, when gender roles were being examined and re-examined. Lennon said it loud, he’s proud to be a “househusband.” He learned to appreciate what housewives did and became closer to his son, he said. That’s cool.
In the Philippines, the man staying in the house and the woman working and being the breadwinner is not a rarity, at least nothing to be ashamed of or sneer at — considering the army of men who are left at home to tend to the children when the missus becomes an OFW. So it is a little strange that Ryan’s househusband overreacts or over-ventilates when neighbors get wind of his being a househusband. On the other hand, uncool his behavior may be, it at least makes for some funny movie situations.
The producers and director have assembled a wonderful cast to depict these situations, from the three principals to the supporting players. It’s a diverse ensemble: Boots Anson-Roa, Dante Rivero, Agot Isidro, Francine Prieto, Bobby Andrews, Lui Villaruz, Rocco Nacino, Miriam Quiambao, Derrick Monasterio and Johnny Revilla.
Big ladies Malou Crisologo and Cai Cortez make a perfect, funny mother-daughter couple who knock on Eugene’s door one evening to confront her about her geriatric lover-benefactor, creating more high jinks.
If most of the other busybodies in local movies have been depicted as jologs and squatter types, Tessie Villarama makes for a refreshing change as the intrusive, middle-class chismosa neighbor, one who would probably be active in parish church activities but considered malicious and evil if her portrayal were not so hilarious.
Still, the movie belongs to the three stars. Eugene plays the lover-mistress with the right mix of gusto and lunacy, surprising us with her character’s vast reservoir of caring and wisdom. She ends up being the couple’s true friend, and she not only mouths the movies craziest lines, she also voices out the movie’s most moving and sensible message.
Judy Ann and Ryan show that their characters’ love for each other is never really in question or danger, their marriage never really on the rocks in spite of some altercations, the growing small doubts, the challenges and difficulties they face, the financial woes, and other people’s meddling. As contractual partners in life, they truly care for each other, trying to resolve things rationally, snapping only when the going gets really, really rough, just like real people do. If the wife and househusband are very believable characters, it’s because the actors who play them are true and sensitive and credible, and they do not have to mug, play cute, go slapstick and play to the gallery to make it all worthwhile.

MARIO BAUTISTA ON MY HOUSE HUSBAND IKAW NA!

IN OUR macho culture where guys are expected to be the breadwinner, a domestic comedy about working wives and stay-at-home husbands like "My Househusband" might not sit well with men.
But in these days when unemployment or underemployment often requires the mom to contribute to the household’s coffers, we’re sure a lot of couples would be able to identify with the situations that real life couple Judy Ann Santos and Ryan Agoncillo go through as the protagonists in this pleasant, amusing family comedy written and directed by Joey Reyes who tries hard to avoid resorting to slapstick to make his viewers laugh.
The film’s title is a short encapsulation of what the story’s concept is all about. When the bank he works for as an executive downsizes, Ryan can’t accept that he’s being demoted and resigns. He applies for other jobs but can’t find work. He hides the truth that he’s jobless from wife Juday, who is understandably miffed when she finds out about it by accident. Juday then works for an insurance company and she’s a big hit with her clients, while Ryan, the once hot-shot bank exec, now keeps house and looks after their two kids.
There are times when you feel like you’re watching the pilot of a TV sitcom about role reversal (like the one Juday and Ryan did after their wedding, "George and Cecil"), but Reyes does manage to come up with some witty, funny comic ideas rising out of this situation. Some fall flat, like Ryan trying to cook some pancakes that end up toasted, but most of them work well, especially with the inclusion of Eugene Domingo as their zany neighbor, the mistress of a DOM who becomes Ryan’s best friend in their neighborhood and initiates him to the joys of watching TV soap operas.
Juday glows as the smart and attractive wife who tries her best to support her husband and his wounded pride, giving her character a bouncy sense of humor. She’s also aware that this is more of Ryan’s picture and has the grace to stand aside to let him have his day after he supported her before in "Kasal Kasali Kasalo" where she won best actress. Ryan radiates warmth and is quite hilarious as the husband who goes through the trials and tribulations of caring for their two kids and doing household chores. Eugene once again shines in a scene-stealing role, tossing off one funny line after another with much flair. She also provides the funniest scene in the movie when she attempts to commit suicide then changes her mind about it, with Juday getting to slap her twice to keep her awake after taking too much ascorbic acid.
The feel-good movie has a lot heart in it since it not only deals with marital relationships but also a couple’s relationship with their extended family who might be caring but can be too pesky and meddlesome at times, as typified by Agot Isidro as Juday’s elder sister. The film also profits so much from the fact that Juday and Ryan are truly an endearing couple, off an on screen. Juday bloomed and became more beautiful after marrying Ryan. It’s so easy to see their marriage is really working well as the joy and affection of their being married to each other not only fills up but palpably jumps off the screen to please viewers, both men and women, young and old alike.

‘My Househusband,’ the movie to beat in the 2011 MMFF

THE much awaited dramedy and Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) entry “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!“ has lead actors known for stellar acting prowess that many believe will weigh in mightily come awards night on Dec. 28.
Judy Ann Santos, who, in the movie, plays Mia, a mother and wife who is the sole breadwinner of her family, is not touted young superstar for nothing. She has been in show business for 23 years now and has done about 70 movies, many of which have won awards for her from many prestigious award-giving bodies.
In “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!“ Judy Ann delivers a performance that director Joey Reyes lauds as realistic acting that no doubt stems from the fact that her leading man here is her real-life husband, Ryan Agoncillo. Their first movie together since tying the knot, the two bring to the silver screen a chemistry that is based on a genuine, if not intuitive, understanding and essay of their roles. This early, many predict Judy Ann is shoo-in for Best Actress in the 2011 MMFF.
Although Ryan Agoncillo is better known as TV host, and one of the best ones in his generation too, he is a strong contender in the Best Actor category for playing Rod, a man who is bank manager one day then househusband the next. “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!“ is certainly Ryan’s movie more than any one else’s as he has the most number of scenes among the cast members. But more than that, his delineation of provider turned circumstantial housekeeper will have people laughing, thinking, understanding and, perhaps, more accepting of the fact that there is no one formula or set-up that makes a family work.
Comedienne Eugene Domingo has been winning awards left and right for five years in a row now. More, she is one of few actresses – if not the only one – in the Philippine entertainment history to have participated in six films produced by eight different Filipino production companies within a year. To say that she is great at what she does and is one of the most in-demand actresses these days is an understatement.
In “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!” Eugene plays Aida, a mistress who happens to be Rod and Mia’s neighbor. With Mia always away, Rod and Aida develop a friendship that even has the Mrs. jealous at one point. Although Eugene has done so many movies this year, she grabbed the opportunity to be cast in “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!” in order to work anew with Ryan, Judy Ann and direk Joey, and to essay a role that challenges her.
“I’ve never played a mistress before nor best friend to a straight guy. Even in real life, I have lots of girl and gay friends but very few straight guys so I am tackling my role here from a fresh point of view,” said she, who’s gusto in working on “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!” surely brought out the best in her yet again.
With the stellar acting prowess of its talents in and the very relatable story of “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!” it is expected to lead box-office results and bring home the highest awards in the MMFF 2011.
OctoArts Films’ “My Househusband: Ikaw Na” opens on Christmas Day.

‘Tampuhan,’ Ryan-Judy Ann style

Manila, Philippines – JUDY Ann Santos revealed she had difficulty acting out a scene in her forthcoming starrer with husband Ryan Agoncillo, “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!”
The scene required her to shout at Ryan’s character and deliver the line, “Bwisit na buhay ito!”
Juday claimed it ran contrary to her true-life character. Nagi-guilty ako talaga!” the actress revealed.
Between the two of them, Juday said she’s the peacemaker. She makes the first move for them to reconcile whenever they get into a fight. She can’t stand the silent treatment.
She said she would tail her husband and beg him repeatedly, “Kausapin mo ako, please… please mag-usap naman tayo.” And she would persist until an exasperated Ryan finally gives in to her plea.
“Gustong-gusto niya na ikaw ang nababaliw,” she said.
Lest you think ill of Ryan as a husband, he said in jest, through seven years of close association with Juday, he’s become familiar with her fighting (let’s tone it down to “tampuhan”) style. And now that they’re married, he’s merely copying it, to spice up their relationship a bit. Believe me, it’s working wonders on their marriage! Ask ’em for details. Or ask director Joey Reyes, who happens to be the couple’s friend and neighbor.
Joey Reyes is also the director of “My Househusband,” OctoArts Films entry to the forthcoming Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF). Direk Joey calls “My Househusband” a slice of true life. “Makikita ninyo ang sarili n’yo o isa man lang sa mga kakilala n’yo sa pelikulang ito,” he explained.
In this movie, however, Ryan and Juday are not playing their lives as husband and wife. They are thrust in an entirely different domestic situation prevalent in the present time. “My Househusband” is about married couple Rod (Ryan) and Mia (Judy Ann) who has a non-traditional setup. Rod takes care of the house and the kids while Mia looks after putting bread on the table. Along the way, situations arise that test the arrangement and their relationship.
Adding third-wheel support (as requested by producer Orly Ilacad) to the tested tandem is Eugene Domngo as a kept woman. “This film recognizes the equality of sexes according to the times. Moviegoers will leave the theater with an even healthier appreciation of the roles of husband and wife, and yet also of the importance of individuality,” direk Joey said. (Tessa A. Castillo)

‘Yung mga make-up ko, when I saw them, you do not want to run into them in the dark," sabi ni Maricar.
Judy Ann: “Puwede both?”

Couple Ryan Agoncillo and Judy Ann Santos reveal the best gift they received from each other

Couple Ryan Agoncillo and Judy Ann Santos reveal the best gift they received from each other
Ryan Agoncillo says his wife is the best gift he received, while Judy Ann says that her hubby’s understanding and support is all she can ask for.

“Diet at ‘tsaka exercise. Malaking factor talaga yung exercise.

“And, of course with Ryan, around, supportive siya kasi [sa pagpapapayat ko].”

“Pero, kapag nasa somewhere in between yung isyu namin, deadma lang kami pareho, kumbaga.

Sabad naman ni Ryan, na tumatawa, “So lately, I’ve been trying to be nicer and it’s working naman. Pero kasi, baka manibago.”

“Finish these sentences and explain the answer” portion naman ang isinunod ni Raymond sa mag-asawa.

Kapag mainit ang ulo ng asawa ko, I would…

“I would go to the den and play video games,” ang tumatawang sagot ni Ryan.

Ayon naman kay Juday…

“Depende.

And after ilang oras, okay na ulit?

The cast members of My Househusband: Ikaw Na! were led by real-life married couple Ryan Agoncillo wearing blue shades) and Judy Ann Santos (wearing brown). They are joined by the film's director Joey Reyes (rightmost).
MERRY Christmas to everybody!
***
He did a good job in MHHIN bilang isang househusband. With Juday, kailangan pa bang i-memorize ‘yan?

My Househusband: Ikaw Na!' has all in place for MMFF sweep

By JOJO P. PANALIGAN

Ryan Agoncillo (M), Judy Ann Santos (R) and Eugene Domingo make up the team to beat in this year's MMFF
Ryan Agoncillo (M), Judy Ann Santos (R) and Eugene Domingo make up the team to beat in this year's MMFF
MANILA, Philippines - It does not have things that go bump in the night nor is it about a controversial personage but nevertheless “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!” will most likely end up with the top awards in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

First off: "My Househusband: Ikaw Na!" is about a married couple who has a non-traditional set up in which the husband takes care of the kids and in manning the house while the wife looks after putting food on the table. Along the way, situations arises that test the arrangement and their relationship.

Now if this kind of film brings home the bacon come awards night on Dec. 28, then it will give prospective producers of MMFF entries in the coming years, something to chew about when it comes to deciding on what type of movies to bankroll: those that make you go “Wow, that’s incredible!” or “Wow, that’s relatable.” Indeed, as Direk Joey Javier Reyes has said in his most recent interviews, what “My Househusband : Ikaw Na!” offers is simply a slice of real life in the here and now.

And what could be a more timely subject than a husband who suddenly loses his job and finds himself one day making – burning - pancakes at home while his wife is away earning a living? Had this film been done in the ‘90s or ‘80s, it probably wouldn’t resonate with people as much as it does nowadays when many have lost their jobs and when both husband and wife need to work to keep body and soul together. Many will see themselves in the shoes of the lead characters or at least know someone who fits the bill.

It helps that the stars of the film – Ryan Agoncillo as Rod, the husband; Judy Ann Santos as Mia, the working mother; and Eugene Domingo as Aida, the next door neighbor who befriends Rod – have more chemistry than a periodic table. Perhaps it’s a given between Ryan and Judy Ann since they are real-life couple, but the way they relate to Eugene either together or one on one seemingly indicates that even the husband and wife have not lost their friendship. It is the same easy going rapport among the three.

We also note that there’s an imperceptible balance and respect among the actors especially when it comes to the funny scenes. Although Eugene is better known as comedienne as compared with the two, Mia and Rod also brought on the laughs even with Aida there. It’s a happy give and take situation that’s almost intuitive and one that only actors of their caliber and with their sense can deliver.

Director Joey Reyes is in his elements here. “ My Househusband: Ikaw Na!” is very much in the running in the MMFF but the viewers forget that: no scene is made for the purpose of winning a trophy, no line was thought up in the hopes that it would serve as recall for the film. We’re not saying that there are none of those in “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!” – there are lots, actually.

But nothing is forced, not even planned; Reyes simply wanted to tell a story and one that's damn good.

“My Househusband: Ikaw Na!”: Best Picture? Best Actor? Best Actress? Best Supporting Actress? It’s likely.

What’s certain is that the film will transcend the festival itself.

OctoArts Films’ “My Househusband: Ikaw Na!” opens on Dec. 25.
