5 Parenting Tips from Judy Ann Santos

August 01, 2011

Good Housekeeping's August cover girl shares her mommy adventures.
judy_ann.jpgAward-winning actress Judy Ann Santos has just started making more public appearances after staying out of the limelight for the past year to take care of her family. A hands-on wife and mom, Judy Ann makes running the household and bringing up her kids, Yohan and Lucho, her priorities in life--especially because she's always dreamed of being a homemaker. "Naiikot na talaga yung mundo ko sa pamilya ko (My world really revolves around my family now),” she shares. “It’s a big change, but you don’t want to miss out."

In Good Housekeeping Philippines's August 2011 issue, Juday recounts her experiences in motherhood and shares advice for old and new parents alike. Read on for five quick parenting tips from Juday.

1. MAKE TIME FOR BONDING WITH THE KIDS.

Juday makes it a point to spend time with her kids and make them feel loved. Besides preparing their food and hanging out with them at home, she also schedules other activities. "Sometimes, Yohan and I go on a date. The afternoons are Lucho’s," she explains. One of her certified bonding dates with Yohan is watching her soccer matches. "Parang soccer mom," she says, laughing.

2. KNOW HOW TO ENFORCE DISCIPLINE.

Neither Juday nor husband Ryan Agoncillo believe in spanking children. Instead, they apply the Rule of Three--if Yohan disobeys them three times (also known as "bingo" in their household), they make her face the wall. "But that’s the maximum na. Hanggang dun lang ’yun kasi ’yung paluin namin siya? Hangga’t maaari, hindi dapat nilalapatan ng kamay ang mga bata. (That's it because we don't want to spank her. As much as possible, you shouldn't lay a hand on kids.)"

3. TEACH THEM TO BE SELF-RELIANT.

Juday shares that she and Ryan want their kids to be responsible and to not always rely on helpers. Yohan, for example, already knows she has to put her plate in the sink after eating, place her used clothes in the hamper, and even clear her toys away after playing. "Kaya ngayon she knows better than to put all her toys out. Kasi alam niya siya ’yung magliligpit nun. (That's why now she knows better than to put all her toys out. Because she knows she's the one who's going to put them away.)

4. MAKE LEARNING FUN AND INTERACTIVE.

Juday devices creative ways to teach Yohan important lessons. "I make her participate in cooking her food, so that she’d know she’s [being a good girl by] eating her veggies," she says, giving an example. "I guess it's working." Now, Juday shares, Yohan knows what goes into her favorite pumpkin soup!

5. WORK WITH YOUR PARTNER.

Make sure that you and your hubby's parenting styles are unified, and work together to raise your kids well. For Juday and Ryan, this really means "partnership"--they understand that they both have to put in efforts to keep the family balanced. "'Pag may isa sa amin ang na kay Lucho, may isa kay Yohan. So nung nanganak ako, palaging nag-de-date si Yohan at Ryan. (When one of us with Lucho, the other is with Yohan. That's why, when I gave birth, Yohan and Ryan always had dates.)"
