Movie review: Jose Javier Reyes' indie turn in 'Mga Mumunting Lihim'

There is not much to say about Jose Javier Reyes’ last forays into commercial filmmaking, where it is undeniable that his moviemaking process begins with who will take lead roles, and the goal is only to ascertain box-office success even in the context of the much-reviled Metro Manila Film Festival in the Decembers of our lives. Suffice it to say that I could only be excited by the thought of Reyes going indie, and when I say excited I mean I had the lowest of expectations, but was willing to be surprised. He must have something up his sleeve, I thought. I trust that he does.
 
I remember too that last time I saw the famed and famous directors going indie, and how it meant Peque Gallaga going all “Agaton and Mindy” on us, and Soxie Topacio going in the direction of “Dead Na Si Lolo.” Those were good days. 
 
"Mga Mumunting Lihim" tells the story of four friends, all adult women, in conversations that were real and hit close to home.
Gladly, “Mga Mumunting Lihim” might go on that shelf, too. And I don’t know if it was because I had just seen Raymond Red’s “Kamera Obskura” before it, but I sure was taken by this story of four friends, all adult women, in conversations that were real and hit close to home. It could also have been the fact that there was something distant still about this narrative, and I could forgive it many things including its use of the flashback as storytelling device. 
 
The story begins at the end, where one of them, Mariel (Judy Ann Santos), dies of cancer, and the rest of the three women are forced into the downward spiral of loss and grief that only very close friendships know to be possible. But the death is the unraveling of this friendship too, and this is no quiet and calm undoing. Instead it is this: Mariel leaves her diaries with the one friend she’s kept the longest, Carla (Iza Calzado), and the latter can’t help but read one diary to the next. The unraveling as such is not in the control of any one of them who are alive; Carla’s own issues about taking control and being the leader of the pack made her willing victim to these secrets left behind.
 
Because that’s what those diaries held, Mariel’s articulations of what they’ve left unsaid in their small group that includes Olive (Janice de Belen) and Sandra (Agot Isidro). Her bravery is only measured by the fact of having left those diaries behind to someone, instead of letting the words die with her. 
 
Certainly these friends weren’t honest with each other enough, couldn’t deal with their insecurities and opinions as openly as they should have. And yes, this is believable, where women’s friendships are not always a version of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda in “Sex and the City,” and instead can be versions of Betty and Veronica, yes the comics characters, in real life, though maybe not as one-dimensional. 
 
The latter is what’s revealed about the friendship of Carla and Mariel, where competition and envy is the thread that runs through their relationship from elementary. It is in the fact that Carla became a career woman, big shot advertising executive, while Mariel is the perfect housewife, mother of two kids, but with a good head on her shoulders. Olive and Sandra are so different from Carla and Mariel, it is a surprise that they are friends. 
 
Olive is the housewife, whose interest in younger men has meant a necessary put-down from the other three girls. Olive is perennially in need of money, working overseas as her young husband is, and has asked all of the three other girls for loans at different points in their friendship. Sandra is the one who married an old rich man who gives her everything she wants, and which transformed her into the monster member of the nouveau riche. Her conversation is superficial, about the things to acquire and the days she fills with house renovations.
 
The nuances of each woman’s character are revealed through flashbacks borne of the diaries on the one hand, current conversations among the three living friends on the other. Those present conversations of course are tainted by what Mariel says in the diary, secrets that Carla cannot keep from Olive and Sandra, because she is amused by these revelations, too. Of course the entertainment only lasts for as long as she isn’t the subject of Mariel’s words, as long as she’s not the one being faced with words that are about her.
 
Meanwhile, the entertainment for the audience is in the fact of real conversations among women who are familiar. When Carla, in the guise of clearing the air, sits the two girls down so they might all deal with what they’ve said about each other to Mariel, it becomes a free for all that is revelation in itself: how have these women survived their differences? Sandra is angry because her matapobre self makes her the meanest one of the group, and she isn’t used to being called out. Olive meanwhile will not have any of it and wants to walk out—she is the kindest and calmest of them all, and refuses the engagement. But Carla is used to getting her way and so the undoing happens in public, turning all of them into the stereotype of bungangera, with plenty of good ol’ Filipino curse words thrown in. 
 
Suffice it to say that this might be one of the better conversations to be had in this film, also one of the more refreshing ones. And did I mention fun? This might be said as well about the scenes that flashback to when Mariel was still alive and she and the rest of the girls could go drinking and space-brownie-eating, talk about dildos and sex and men. This was in the individual conversations between the girls, where they could reprimand each other, or fall quiet and let another tell her story. The banter here is honest, the dialogue real. This would also be why it was believable, the way these friends handled Mariel’s cancer: they did so without losing their capacity at laughter, within the same conversations, that were quieter and more introspective. 
 
An audience of Pinays will know themselves better through this film, if only because the mirror they’re forced to look at reveals reflections that aren’t shiny and perfect, stereotypical and conventional.
Of course the success of these characters had a lot to do with this cast of four actresses, who across the board did their characters well and to the hilt. Calzado seems to have had the shorter end of the stick here, where her character isn’t quite established as powerful career woman, and that perception is created only through Mariel’s words. This failing is the reason why when she ends with throwing some curses in the direction of Mariel’s ashes, her anger barely makes sense, and the movie ended with less than the bite it set itself up for. 
 
The rest of the three actresses are given much more to work with. Isidro as matapobre and superficial doesn’t falter at any point, and her shining moments are in the instances when she doesn’t have any dialogue and yet her demeanor, her face, the way she carries herself still speaks of the kind of person she is. Santos is brilliant as expected, and what astounds you, if you’ve watched her commercial films, is her ability at holding back, letting go of the excesses that Mother Lily’s and Star Cinema’s brand of film likes to see in its actresses. It’s like “Ploning” all over again without the enterprise of making an indie film. Here, it’s just Santos-becomes-Mariel, discontent and unhappy, grateful and tired, at the point of dying. 
 
But it might be de Belen who shows us what acting is all about here, where you forget completely who she is and you only have Olive: simple and simplistic, will take the more harmonious route anytime, will refuse to speak ill of anyone. She seems almost slap happy, has conceded to being less sophisticated than her friends, and de Belen hits that out of the ballpark, allowing Olive’s insecurities to complete her character. What you’re left with is a very clear and concrete sense of an Olive that exists in real life, like the aunt who will shower you with love, or the older sister who will have stories about the neighbors, both will cook you a hot fresh meal anytime.
 
But more than having a set of believable characters, what “Mga Mumunting Lihim” gives you is a set of real women, who have conversations that are fun and heartfelt, even as you know that alongside these conversations are the silenced and unsaid. I understand why the independent filmmaking universe is wont to dismiss this as a bad film, for reasons that would have everything to do with having Reyes at the helm. Yet in light of an audience of women who might only watch commercial romantic-comedies and dramas, much might be said about this movie’s value. 
 
Because an audience of Pinays will know themselves better through this film, if only because the mirror they’re forced to look at reveals reflections that aren’t shiny and perfect, stereotypical and conventional. At least the audience is given a world of women that isn’t American, and isn’t stuck in notions of love and romance, and the perennial search for a happy ending. Instead Mariel, Carla, Sandra and Olive treat us to being women in these shores, given the friendships that we form, the competition we fall into, our own undoing in this dynamic. At the very least, we are told that we might handle our friendships with other women better, that we listen to each other a little more, laugh and drink and be merry more often, too. 
 
And in the context of romances with happy endings, prettified women’s roles even when they’re OFWs and cancer patients, struggling members of the working class or glorified prostitutes, the Pinay audience can only be better off with a film like this one. Ibinahagi ni Juday na wala pa man siyang asawa, alam niyang may kulang pa sa kanyang buhay, ang maging isang ganap na ina.

Naikwento niya ang rason sa kanyang pag-adopt sa panganay na anak na si Yohan, “Gusto ko talaga! Pinagdasal ko talaga yun e. There’s just this part of me na I want to have a baby.Dumating pa nga ako sa punto na sabi ko sa sarili ko, kung hindi ako makahanap o walang dumating sa akin na baby by 26, kahit walang asawa magbubuntis ako. Nandun ako sa pag-iisip na kahit anong sabihin ng tao sa akin, wala akong pakialam. May artificial inseminationnaman, ang dami nang paraan. Kasi gusto kong lumalaki yung anak ko na kasabay ko. Gusto ko kabarkada ko siya.”

Bukas sa pag-amin si Juday at ang kanyang asawang si Ryan Agoncillo na hindi man nanggaling sa kanyang sinapupunan si Yohan, galing naman ito sa kanyang puso. Pero habang tumatanda si Yohan, inamin ni Judy Ann na nagiging mahirap na ang mga nagiging tanong ni Yohan tungkol ditto. “Habang lumalaki siya, nag-iiba yung bigat ng tanong niya. Minsan dumarating ako sa punto na hindi ko na siya masagot agad kasi naiiyak ako. ‘Let’s talk about this when we get home.’ Kailangan ko pang mag-compose ng tamang mga words na sasabihin sa kanya na hindi magmumukhang dinedeny ko siya sa magulang niya.”

Ibinahagi din ni Judy Ann kung paano siya bilang ina sa kanyang mga anak. “Gusto ko meron akong panahon sa kanila. Kung ano gutso nila, go. Pero like simple things lang, like laro tayo, habulan tayo… Yun yung iniintroduce namin ni Ryan sa kanila. Nilalayo namin sila sa ganap ng computer.Gusto namin maexperience nila makipaghabulan, patintero, mapawisan. Hindi yung naka-airconlang lagi. Iniinvolve ko sila sa pagluluto especially si Yohan na nakakaintindi na siya ngayon.”

Isang hamon din sa mag-asawa na panatilihing walang selosang namamagitan sa magkapatid na sina Yohan at bunsong si Lucho. Pero inamin ng ina na may mga pagkakatong nagseselos si Yohan sa kapatid kaya ang naisip nilang solusyon. “Binigyan namin siya ng assignment. Si Ryan ang nakaisip,if you get jealous you tap Daddy and you let us know if you are jealous already. So ngayon she’s allowed to tell us if she’s jealous.” Dagdag pa niya, “Sobra silang close. Si Lucho kasi ang clingy saAte niya. Nakakatawa dito kay Lucho, tawag niya sa Ate niya, Tita. Takang-taka kami. Kasi anong sabihin namin Ate, Tita!” 

Binuksan din ni Juday ang paksa sa kanyang pagiging maybahay kay Ryan Agoncillo. Bilang nasanay na mula sa pagkabata ay nagtatrabaho na, itinanggi ni Juday na naging isyu na dahil mag-asawa na sila, kailangan niyang mamahinga sa pagtatrabaho. “He (Ryan) would always give me a choice. If you want to go on a break, it’s okay. Just let me know para magtatrabaho ako ng bonggang-bongga. Nasabi ko sa kanya after I gave birth, I’ll take a year off.” Pero matapos ang anim na buwan ginusto na rin ni Juday na magbalik-trabaho at hindi naman siya pinigilan ng asawa. “Pero I would always give him that respect na sasabihin ko sa kanya kung ano ang sisimulan kong trabaho even if I don’t have to.”

Nakatuwaan ding pag-usapan ang aspeto ng romansa sa kanilang mag-asawa. Nang tanungin ni Janice si Juday na, “Sabi nila na kapag nag-asawa na kayo, things change, the passion goes, nagre-relaxnang kaunti especially kapag may anak na, mag nagbago ba?” At ang natatawang sagot ni Juday,“Saan?” kaya naman naitanong ni Janice, “Yan ang maganda, yung gusto ko itanong sa iyo hindi pwede sa TV, pero is it still exciting?” At ang natatawa pa ring sagot ni Mrs. Agoncillo, “Yes, oo naman! Because kami naman we make it a point na every year we go out of the country or we just go out on dates. We have to renew the friendship na we had before  na kung paano tayo nagsimula.”

JUDY ANN, TAGASALBA NG WALA NG CAREER?



SA pakikipag-usap naming sa young superstar na si Judy Ann Santos, nabanggit namin sa kanya ang tungkol sa mga lumulutang noon pa na kapag ang mga artista ay ipinapartner sa kanya, lalong sumisikat at umaangat ang mga career. Naniniwala ba siya rito? Gulat naman niyang pagtanggi, “Weh, hindi naman. Hindi naman oa naman ‘yun. Nakatatakot naman ‘yun.

“Ako ha, ako ha personally hindi ako naniniwala riyan. Naniniwala  ako na sa bawat artista may kanya-kanyang talent ‘yan, may mga pagkakataon na hahanapan mo ng tamang  kapareha para  mailabas ‘yung acting nila o kung anong talent mayroon sila.
 “Ah hindi ako  naniniwala sa salbahan, hindi ako naniniwala sa takipan ng talent, naniniwala ako sa pagtutulungan.
“Baka maaaring may maniwala sa akin o hindi maniwala sa akin, wala po akong gustong patunayan . Ang sa akin lang, unfair naman din sa mga taong sinasabihan ng ganoon kasi alam mo namang nagtatrabaho rin sila.

“And  kung ano man ‘yung marating nila eh deserve rin naman nila kasi trabaho rin naman ‘yung ginagawa nila.

“So, kung ako man ang sasabihan ng ganoon siyempre nakakaliit din naman ng pagkatao ‘yun ‘di ba? So hindi, para  sa akin ang pakikipagtrabaho sa ibang artista ay nakakalawak ng kaaalaman ‘yan pagdating sa pag-arte and matagal na ako sa industriyang to, I’m more than willing to learn from other artist as well lalo na ‘yung mga baguhan kasi for sure, eh may obserbasyon kang makikita sa  kanila  na hindi  mo naman nakita noong nagsisimula ka.

“So in a way nagtutulungan talaga kayo.” Pangungulit pang tanong namin, kung aware ba siya sa mga ganong usapan? Atubili niyang sagot, ”Ay ikaw talaga ha…hindi,” at natawa na lang ang misis ni Ryan Agoncillo.

At dugtong pa nito, ”Hindi ko siya ini-entertain, kasi ayoko maging unfair sa ibang artista and in the same way na akoyo ring maging unfair sila sa akin.”

Judy Ann Santos, takot maging salot sa pelikula nila ni Bong Revilla Jr. at Vic Sotto

SA PANAYAM namin kay Judy Ann Santos sa presscon ng pelikulang Mga Mumunting Lihim, sinabi ng aktres na masaya siya dahil kabi-kabila ang proyektong ginagawa niya sa kasalukuyan.
Aside from the said Direk Jose Javier Reyes’ film, kung saan nagwagi silang apat nina Iza Calzado, Agot Isidro at Janice de Belen ng ‘Ensemble Best Actress at Best Supporting Actress’, tatlo pang kasunod na proyekto ang pinagkakaabalahan niya sa ngayon – isang pelikula at dalawang TV shows.
Inusisa namin si Juday tungkol sa bago niyang pelikula kasama sina Sen. Bong Revilla at Bossing Vic Sotto kung saan siya na ang final na napiling maging leading lady ng dalawa, sa Si Enteng, Si Agimat at Si Ako.
Pag-amin ni Juday, “Alam mo sa totoo lang na-starstruck ako sa dalawa. Ahm… parang hindi hindi ako makapaniwalang ako ‘yung nasa gitna ng dalawang naglalakihang  leading men, marami namang puwedeng iba, ‘di ba? ‘Yung talagang sakto du’n sa karakter. Pero bakit ako? Alam mo ‘yun? May mga ganu’n kang tanong eh, paano ba?”
Agam-agam pa nito, “Paano ko ba to itatawid? Deserve ko ba talaga ang karakter na ‘to? Sadya bang ako ang nararapat na gumanap dito? But then again, again thankful ako na napili nila ako kasi palagi kong sinasabi na it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity na makasama sa isang proyekto ang dalawang malaking artista and it is something na I’m very really thankful. Dahil kumbaga, ang ‘Enteng’ at ang ‘Agimat’ ay nasa magkaibang history yan ng MMFF (Metro Manila Film Festival), pinagsama mo sila at ako ‘yung nasa gitna. Na nakakatuwa, nakakataba ng puso, sana…
“Ang ikinatatakot ko lang ngayon, si Enteng, nag-number 1… si Agimat, nag-number 1… nu’ng magkasama silang dalawa, bonggang-bonggang number 1, at walang nakahabol sa kanila. At sa pagkakataong ito na ako lang ang idinagdag sa pamilya nila, pag nag-number 2 kami, parang ako yata ang salot.
“Abut-abot ang dasal ko sa pressure na, sabi ko, ‘Lord huwag naman please… sana huwag naman, baka katapusan na nang career ko ‘to’.”
Aware kaya siyang second choice lang siya sa role sa pelikula?
Pag-amin nito, “Oo naman. Hindi naman ako… wala namang kaso sa akin ‘yun, ah. Ang trabaho ay trabaho and in fairness naman sa pagsusulat,  sa istorya, hindi naman siya ipinatern sa karakter ni Ai-ai as ‘Tanging Ina’. Kasi naging honest naman din talaga ako sa kanila (producers) na hindi ko kayang gawin kung ano ‘yung kayang gawin ni Ai, kasi nag-iisa siya pagdating sa ganyang pelikula, ‘di ba?
“At walang ibang makakagawa nu’n kasi siya lang ‘yun. Kaya naging tapat naman sila sa akin na sabihing ‘oo naman, alam naman namin ‘yun, at hindi naman ‘yun ang ibibigay naming papel sa ‘yo’. Kasi ang laking pressure noon talaga sa akin at ayoko namang isipin ng mga tao na nasapian ako ni Ai-Ai.
“Kasi hindi ko talaga kayang i-replicate kung ano ‘yung ginagawa ni Ai-Ai. Dahil mataas ang respeto ko sa kanya at kahit kailan, hindi ko magagawang pantayan ang kapasidad ni Ai-ai pagda-ting sa pagko-komedya. Siya lang ‘yun. Kaya kong tumawid sa pagko-komedya sa sarili kong daan… hindi ko alam kong paanong daan, pero tatrabahuhin ko ‘yun.”

Bravo to boys of ‘Reunion,’ ladies of ‘Mumunting Lihim’

“Mga Mumunting Lihim,” a Cinemalaya Filmfest entry, written and directed by Joey Javier Reyes, also focuses on four friends, whose relationship starts when they were in high school. They remain close even after college and become career women.
 
They trust each other tremendously, so much that they all thought they had no secrets. This feeling was shattered when one of them dies and the remaining three got to read her diary and consequently how each one truly feel about each other. This proves true the belief that one can never claim to really know someone.
 
Direk Joey wrote the story of “Mga Mumunting Lihim” (“Those Little Secrets”) almost two years ago as a tribute to two of his dearest friends in showbiz, production designer turned director Don Escudero and TV and movie director Khyrss Adalia, who both died of the Big C.
 
“Actually,” said Direk Joey, “I was waiting for a producer who would want to produce and finance it. It was nang ma-approve ito sa kasali sa Cinemalaya Filmfest that Orly (Ilacad) producer of OctoArts Films) offered to produce it.”
 
“For the roles of the four friends in the movie, I decided to first approach Juday (Judy Ann Santos).
 
“Her first question was: ‘Ano ang role ko?’
 
“When I told her she’ll play a kontrabida, she immediately told me, ‘Game, simula na tayo.’”
 
“Actually, the thought that I would be playing a kontrabida immediately excited me,” Judy Ann recalled.
 
“Do you know that I only shot for my part for about five days? And yet, you can feel my presence to the very end of movie. Nakaka-excite talaga,” she added.
 
Direk Joey said he cannot say enough of all his stars’ performances in “Mga Mumunting Lihim.” Like Judy Ann, the rest, Janice de Belen, Iaza Calzado and Agot Isidro, have proven their worth as actresses. They are all remarkable in their respective roles.
 
“Mga Mumunting Lihim” won best editing, best screenplay for Direk Joey and best performances for the four actresses. 
 
Judy, Iza, Janice and Agot, were cited by said Cinemalaya for their performance “as an ensemble was unparalleled in this specified film festival.”

Aminado si Judy Ann Santos na medyo nahihirapan siya sa pakikipagtrabaho sa Filipino-American actor-singer na si Sam Milby. Sabi ng aktres, “Medyo nahihirapan ako pagdating sa part ng English. Medyo may push-and-pull na nagaganap dito, na pagod na ako."

Pero nitong mga nakalipas na taon ay hindi na ulit nakagawa si Juday ng serye dahil sa hindi na kinaya pa ng kanyang schedule.

Pero sa ngayon, nakatakdang magbalik sa boobtube ang primetime queen ng ABS-CBN sa pamamagitan ng isang teleserye kasama sina Sam Milby at KC Concepcion—ang Against All Odds.Ang huli niyang serye ay ang Habang May Buhay noong 2010 pa sa ABS-CBN.
Kuwento niya, “Nakapag-seven days na kaming taping.
“Hindi nga matuluy-tuloy kasi nga umuulan. Masama ang panahon.
“And nakikiramdam pa kami sa mga papel namin, dahil ang tagal ko ring nawala sa pag-arte sa teleserye, so nangangapa pa ako.
“And nag-pilot na rin ako for Master Chef, nakilala na namin yung mga nag-audition para maging Master Chef contestants.
“Hindi lang namin alam kung kailan talaga yung regular run niya, baka next year... we’re not yet sure.
“So far, yun, busy ako with Enteng, with the teleserye, and some mall shows.”
AGAINST ALL ODDS. Ano ba ang kuwento ng Against All Odds?
“It’s about woman empowerment. A mother who is struggling to raise her son, and at the same time, fighting for her rights… yung ganyan.
“Hindi siya yung normal na teleserye na love story, na magkapatid, o mag-dyowa na may Romeo and Juliet na drama, hindi.
“It’s more of, telling the women or mothers to begin with, na you can fight for your own rights, na you can’t be a superhero but you can be a superhero on your own.
“Hindi siya fantasy na teleserye pero may pakikipaglaban na involved.”

SAM MILBY. First time daw niya niyang makatrabaho ang Filipino-American actor na si Sam Milby at, ayon kay Juday, “medyo nahihirapan ako pagdating sa part ng English.”
Dagdag niya, “Medyo may push-and-pull na nagaganap dito, na pagod na ako.

“Halimbawa, may mababasa siyang, ‘Ano yung mandurukot?' 'Ay, alam ko ‘yan! Pickpocket ‘yan sa English.’“Pero hindi, in fairness kay Sam, may mga efforts siyang magtanong ng, 'Ano ba ang ibig sabihin nitong Tagalog word na 'to?'
“Basta may mga little words siyang tinatanong, na naa-appreciate ko yun kasi he really wants to learn to speak Tagalog.
“And hindi ba nakakatuwang isipin na itong taong ito, nag e-effort naman?
“Siyempre, bigyan naman natin ng kaunting time na ganun.
“Ako nga, hirap na hirap mag-English, paano pa siya? E, di hirap na hirap din siyang mag-Tagalog.
“So patas lang yung laban dito. Walang lamangan.”
Hindi pa raw nila sigurado kung kailan ang airing ng Against All Odds, pero sa impormasyong nakuha ni Juday ay baka sa October ito simulang ipalabas sa ABS-CBN.
Dugtong pa niya, “Yun ang sabi, hindi namin sure kung mami-meet namin.
“Ang sama ng panahon, e, ang setting namin ay asinan.
“E, sa pagkakataong ito, bumabagyo, wala ka nang magagawang asin, natutunaw na siya sa ulan, di ba?
“Medyo mahirap, pero, at least, ibang setting.
"Hindi siya yung talyer, hindi siya yung palayan or bukirin, at least iba naman.
“Huli akong gumawa ng asin ay Ploning pa. So okay na rin yun.”
Ang Ploning ay ang 2008 movie na pinagbidahan ni Judy Ann, na kinunan sa Cuyo, Palawan.

JUDAY, THE LUCKY CHARM. Marami ang nagsasabing isang “lucky charm” daw si Juday sa mga nakakapareha niya, maging sa serye o sa pelikula, dahil aangat daw ang kanilang mga karera kapag nakasama siya.
Aware ba siyang may ganitong mga usapan?
Gulat naman niyang pagtanggi: “Weh, hindi naman! Hindi naman, OA naman yun. Nakakatakot naman yun.
“Ako ha... ako ha, personally, hindi ako naniniwala diyan.
“Naniniwala ako na sa bawat artista, may kanya-kanyang talent ‘yan.
“May mga pagkakataon na hahanapan mo nang tamang kapareha, para mailabas yung acting nila o kung anong talent meron sila.
“Hindi ako naniniwala sa salbahan, hindi ako naniniwala sa takipan ng talent, naniniwala ako sa pagtutulungan.
“A, baka maaaring may maniwala sa akin o hindi maniwala sa akin, wala po akong gustong patunayan.
“Ang sa akin lang, unfair naman din sa mga taong sinasabihan ng ganun, kasi alam mo namang nagtatrabaho din sila.
“And kung ano man yung marating nila e deserve din naman nila kasi trabaho din naman yung ginagawa nila.
“So kung ako man ang sasabihan ng ganun, siyempre nakakaliit din naman ng pagkatao yun, di ba?
“So hindi. Para sa akin, ang pakikipagtrabaho sa ibang artista ay nakakalawak ng kaalaman ‘yan pagdating sa pag arte.
“And matagal na ako sa industriyang 'to, I’m more than willing to learn from other artists as well, lalo na yung mga baguhan.
"Kasi for sure e may obserbasyon kang makikita sa kanila na hindi mo naman nakita noong nagsisimula ka.
“So, in a way, nagtutulungan talaga kayo.”

“Ay, ikaw talaga, ha… hindi!” at natawa na lang ang misis ni Ryan Agoncillo.Ulit namin: Aware ba siya sa mga ganoong usapan?
“Hindi ko siya ini-entertain, kasi ayoko maging unfair sa ibang artista, and in the same way na ayoko ring maging unfair sila sa akin.”

081812-juday-main.jpgSa thanksgiving na ginanap para sa pagkapanalo ng Cinemalaya Entry na Mumunting Lihim sa apat na major awards kasama na dito ang pagkapanalo ni Judy Ann Santos bilang Best Actress, nakapanayam ang Queen of Teleserye tungkol sa relasyon nila ngayon ng kanyang manager na si Alfie Lorenzo. Unang napabalita ang away diumano nina Alfie at Judy Ann dahil sa hindi nito pagpayag na makatambal si Sam Milby. At ngayon ngang sinisimulan na ang shooting ng kanilang teleserye, naitanong namin kung kamusta na ang relasyon nila ng manager at ayon kay Judai, “Kami naman ni Tito Alfie parati namang ganun, hindi naman lingid sa kaalaman niyo yan. May mga moments at napapadalas angmoments na yan na may mga tampuhan sohindi naiiwasan at hindi ko naman din gustong iwasan yung mga ganyan kasi sa ganung mga paraan matututo ka rin. I am sure one way or another si Tito Alfie may natutunan din.”

Ngunit idiniin naman ni Judai na kahit napapadalas ang mga pinagdadaanan nilang hindi pagkakaintindihan ng kanyang manager, nag-uusap pa rin sila at bukas ang kanilang komunikasyon sa isa’t isa lalo pa at nung mga panahong nanalasa ang Habagat. “Tinawagan ko siya nung panahon na may Habagat kasi sa may Panay (Quezon City, isa sa mga lugar na apektado ng baha) siya nakatiraso nag-alala ako baka nabaha na siya eh si Tito Alfie naman parang may pagsa-lili pong ayaw niyang magpa-rescue, dun lang siya sa bahay niya so kinamusta ko.”

Isa din sa mga itinuturong dahilan din ng kanilang hindi pagkakasundo ng talent manager ay dahil sa pagpayag at paggawa ni Judai ng indie film ngunit ayon kay Judai masasabing maayos na sila ng talent manager. “Okay naman, nagtext siya sa akin. Tinanong niya kung nanalo ako ng Best Actress,sabi ko, opo.

At sa panayam ng programang Cinemanews tungkol sa isyung ito sa direktor ng Mumunting Lihim na si Joey Reyes umamin ito na naipit din siya hindi pagkakaintindihan nina Judai at ng kanyang manager. “Ako nag-apologize, dahil inaamin ko naman pagkukulang ko yun. It was an oversight on my part, miscommunication and I apologized kasi inaamin ko naman na ako may mali doon. I know nagalit si Alfie with a reason, tinatanggap ko kung anong mga batikos niya sa akin dahil sa pangyayari na yun.

Nais na din ng award-winning director na matapos na ang kaguluhang namamagitan sa kanila. “I hope at this point after all that is said and done, na tapos na, matagal din naman ang pagkakakilala sa akin ni Alfie at matagal ko na rin kilala si Alfie. Wala namang samahan na hindi merong kaunting hindi pagkakaintindihan, pero para sa akin tapos na yun, sana tapos na rin sa kanya kasi malaki ang respeto ko sa kanya.”

Natanong din kung nagkaroon na ba sila ng pagkakaton na magkausap ng manager at ang sagot ni Direk Joey, “Hindi pa. Wala pa namang pagkakataon na mag-usap kami pero I think when we bump into each other it will still be the same na magtatawanan kami, I hope so.”

Masaya ang buong cast and crew ng Cinemalaya 2012 entry na Mga Mumunting Lihim dahil magkakaroon ito ng commercial run at graded A pa ito ng Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB).
Noong Martes, August 14, nagkaroon ng presscon ang pelikula sa may Guilly’s Bar sa Tomas Morato. Dito nakausap ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) ang isa sa mga bida ng pelikula na si Judy Ann Santos.

Bukod sa Mga Mumunting Lihim, tatlong proyekto pa ang pinagkakaabalahan niya ngayon—isang pelikula at dalawang TV shows.Masaya si Juday dahil kabi-kabila ang proyektong ginagawa niya sa kasalukuyan.
HALIPAROT NA FAIRY. Inusisa ng PEP si Juday tungkol sa bago niyang pelikula kasama sina Senator Bong Revilla at Vic Sotto, ang Si Agimat, Si Enteng At Si Ako.
Kuwento niya, “Ako kasi ang pangalan ko dun.
“Ako si Ako, ang pangalan ko dun ay Ako… isa akong engkantada ng kalikasan.
“So, yun ang role ko, ako ang taga-protekta ng mga gubat, ng mga park, tapos naghahanap ng mapapangasawa sa katauhan nina Agimat [Bong] at ni Enteng [Vic].
“Kaya tinawag ko na lang yung sarili kong ‘haliparot na fairy,’ kasi parang unang shoot pa lang namin ay hirap akong ilagay ang sarili ko sa character, kasi hindi ko alam kong ano ba talaga ako dito.
“Hanggang sa noong pangalawang araw, yun na, nakamada ko na yung character.
“Nahuli ko na yung gusto ni Direk Tony [Reyes] kaya yun, naisip ko, ako yung harot na fairy kasi maharot. Alam mo yung yuppie na fairy?”
Nilinaw namin kay Judy Ann kung haliparot o harot na fairy ba ang gagampanan niyang role?
Parang patanong niyang tugon, “Pareho, magkaiba ba ang ibig sabihin noon?”
Magpapa-sexy kaya siya dito?
Natatawa niyang sagot, “Kaya ko ba yun? Parang ang dami ko pang dapat gawin. Hindi, ‘no!
“Yuppie, na fairy, na may crush kay Enteng at Agimat. Doon magsisimula ang gulo—sa akin.”
COMEDIENNE JUDAY. So mailalabas niya dito ang pagiging komedyana niya?

Sa telebisyon naman ay ipinamalas din nilang mag-asawa ang kanilang galing sa pagpapatawa via ABS-CBN’s sitcom George and Cecil (2009-2010).Matatandaang nagko-comedy si Juday sa ilang pelikula nila noon ng asawang si Ryan Agoncillo—ang Metro Manila Film Festival entries nilang Kasal Kasali Kasalo(2006), Sakal Sakali Saklolo (2007), at My House Husband (2011).
Ani Juday, “A, oo. Sana maitawid ko yung comedy side ko na yun—baka nawala na siya sa akin, di ko masabi.
“E, English pa kaya, teka muna, huwag kayong mag-expect masyado, ha.”
BOX-OFFICE PRESSURE. Kumusta katrabaho sina Senator Bong at Bossing Vic?
Pag-amin ni Juday, “Alam mo, sa totoo lang, na-starstruck ako sa dalawa. Uhm, parang hindi-hindi ako makapaniwalang ako yung nasa gitna ng dalawang naglalakihang leading men with Senator Bong and Bossing Vic.
“Marami namang puwedeng iba, di ba?
“Yung talagang sakto dun sa karakter, pero bakit ako?
“Alam mo yun? May mga ganun kang tanong, e.”
Agam-agam pa nito, “Paano ko ba to itatawid? Deserve ko ba talaga ang karakter na ‘to? Sadya bang ako ang nararapat na gumanap dito?’
“But then again, again thankful ako na napili nila ako, kasi palagi ko sinasabi na it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity na makasama sa isang proyekto ang dalawang malaking artista.
“And it is something na I’m very really thankful dahil, kumbaga, ang Enteng at angAgimat ay nasa magkaibang history ‘yan ng MMFF, pinagsama mo sila, at ako yung nasa gitna.
“Na nakakatuwa, nakakataba ng puso, sana…

“Ang ikinakatakot ko lang ngayon, si Enteng, nagna-number one. Si Agimat, nagna-number one.
“Nung magkasama silang dalawa, bonggang-bonggang number one at walang nakahabol sa kanila.

“Abot -abot ang dasal ko sa pressure, na sabi ko na, ‘Lord, huwag naman please, sana huwag naman, baka katapusan na ng career ko ‘to.’”“At sa pagkakataong ito, na ako lang ang idinagdag sa pamilya nila, pag nag-number two kami, parang ako yata ang salot!
SECOND CHOICE. Naibalita noon na hindi si Judy Ann ang first choice na makasama nina Senator at Bossing Vic sa muling pagsasama nila sa pelikula, kundi si Ai-Ai delas Alas.
Pagsasamahin sana ang mga karakter ni Senator Bong bilang Agimat, ni Bossing Vic bilang Enteng, at ni Ai-Ai bilang Ina ng Ang Tangina Ina Mo.
Pero hindi natuloy si Ai-Ai dahil nakasaad sa kontrata nito sa Star Cinema na sa susunod na taon pa siya puwedeng gumawa ng pelikula para sa MMFF.
Aware ba si Judy Ann na second choice lang siya sa pelikula?
“Oo naman. Hindi naman ako, wala namang kaso sa akin yun.
“Ang trabaho ay trabaho and in fairness naman sa pagsusulat sa istorya, hindi naman siya ipinatern sa karakter ni Ai-Ai as Tanging Ina.
“Kasi naging honest naman din talaga ako sa kanila [producers] na hindi ko kayang gawin kung ano yung kayang gawin ni Ai.
"Kasi nag-iisa siya pagdating sa ganyang pelikula, di ba? At walang ibang makakagawa nun kasi siya lang yun.
“Kaya naging tapat naman sila sa akin na sabihing, ‘Oo naman, alam naman namin yun. At hindi naman yun yung ibibigay naming papel sa ‘yo.'
“Kasi ang laking pressure noon talaga sa akin at ayoko namang isipin ng mga tao na nasapian ako ni Ai-Ai.
“Kasi hindi ko talaga kayang i-replicate kung ano yung ginagawa ni Ai-Ai.
“Dahil mataas ang respeto ko sa kanya, at kahit kailan hindi ko magagawang pantayan ang kapasidad ni Ai-Ai pagdating sa pagko-komedya. Siya lang yun.
“Kaya kong tumawid sa pagko-komedya sa sarili kong daan. Hindi ko alam kong paanong daan, pero tatrabahuin ko yun.”
