“Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala” starring Judy Ann Santos is among the latest offerings that ABS-CBN is eyeing for an international audience, following the successes of “Pangako Sa’Yo” and “Magkaribal,” among others, which have aired overseas.
ABS-CBN International Distribution, via its official website, recently unveiled the packaged versions of a number of Kapamilya soap operas, including “Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala,” with the international title “Against All Odds”; and “Muling Buksan ang Puso,” which has the English title “If Only.”
The two ABS-CBN series aired back-to-back early this year, with the Julia Montes drama making its primetime debut on July 8, a month after Santos’ comeback drama series premiered.
Starring Santos as battered wife Anessa Panaligan, “Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala” was billed as an advocacy series as it centered on the character’s journey from being a submissive partner to a powerful woman bent on revenge and reclaiming her son.
It ended its three-month run on August 23 with its highest-ever rating of 32.5% across the country — a feat highlighted by ABS-CBN International Distribution in its introduction of the series to the international market.
“Muling Buksan ang Puso,” meanwhile, spanned generations of love stories, and how this complicated history has trickled down to the relationships of the principal characters played by Julia Montes, Enrique Gil, and Enchong Dee.
Kapamilya shows going int’l
Early this year, ABS-CBN International Distribution also unveiled international versions of the top-rating series “Ina, Kapatid, Anak” (“Her Mother’s Daughter”), “Walang Hanggan” (“My Eternal”), and the ongoing daytime soap “Be Careful With My Heart.”
These programs were highlighted in ABS-CBN’s exhibits at the Marché International des Programmes de Télévision (MIPTV) in France last April and at DISCOP West Asia in Turkey last March.
Both events are international conventions where media companies can sell and acquire content, such as TV programs and formats, among participating groups.
“Be Careful With My Heart” has since started airing on TV3 in Malaysia, where it regularly becomes a trending topic on micro-blogging site Twitter, as in the Philippines.
Other recent Kapamilya shows that have been packaged for the international market, as cataloged on ABS-CBN International Distribution’s official website, include “Apoy sa Dagat” (“Raging Love”), “Princess and I,” “Kahit Puso’y Masugatan” (“Hearts on Fire”), “Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo” (“Without You”), and “My Binondo Girl” (“Jade”).
ABS-CBN, through its International Distribution Division, has already sold over 30,000 hours of content to over 50 territories worldwide. These include “Pangako Sa’Yo,” the 2000 series starring Jericho Rosales and Kristine Hermosa, which went on the become one of the most successful Philippine series to air internationally.
